The Direction of Removal — liberation is removing what you built; uprooting is ignoring what you inherited
In the 1970s, Brazil's military government banned lyrics from protest music. Grupo Um — already working within their own compositional grammar — had their chosen constraint removed by force. What remained was structure they had built: harmonies, counterpoint, the sonic vocabulary they owned. The removal landed on self-made ground. The music became freer.
Removing a constraint you didn't build is different. Copyright in choreography, credit in sampling, attribution in folk tradition — these weren't placed by you. They came with the work, carrying the labor and identity of others. Removing them without acknowledgment doesn't clear ground. It removes someone else's foundation from under their feet.
Same action, different outcomes. The question isn't what you remove. It's whose. Liberation: remove constraints you built. The ground beneath is yours. Uprooting: ignore constraints you inherited. You didn't lay that floor. In the sketch: two points, same circle, a threshold at center. Above — hue advances, accumulates, becomes. Below — hue fades, contracts, forgets.
